LOVE NEVER FAILS

1 CORINTHIANS 13:8 – Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

All of us Christians know the first part of this verse by heart, and it is often displayed as a motto on the walls of Christian homes. Everyone can grasp the meaning of these words, yet upon careful reflection, Christians can discover even deeper significance. To study God’s Word thoroughly—thereby demonstrating our utmost reverence for the Word of the Living God—let us attempt to answer the following questions:

– Do non-believers know how to love? Or are Christians the only ones capable of love?
– How many types of love exist in this world?
– How can we distinguish between right love and wrong love? Or can the mere act of loving never be wrong?
– Did a person filled with the Holy Spirit, such as the prophet Elijah, possess love? Why did he not forgive, but instead call down fire from heaven to consume 102 soldiers alive?
– Will a believer who lacks love be lost? Conversely, will a non-believer who possesses love be saved?

As we Christians attempt to answer these thought-provoking questions, we will come to understand why love never fails. The questions above are meant to encourage you to avoid understanding God’s Word merely by its literal, surface meaning.
