GOD IS THE SOVEREIGN RULER OVER ALL | Part 2
Even the Holy Spirit—who is the WISDOM of God—is a distinct Person. For this reason, the Scriptures record that God “brought forth” (or begat) Her (Proverbs 8:24, 26). Because of this, we as Christians can understand that although the Lord Jesus and the Holy Spirit are two distinct Persons, both are ONE with God. This is why the Bible declares that God is the SOVEREIGN LORD over all things: everything that exists today originates from Him and exists by Him.
Since God existed alone in the beginning—and He possesses all wisdom—everything He created was part of His eternal plan. He eliminated anything outside that plan. We must remember that Satan is an adversary of God. He has employed various means in a deliberate attempt to undermine God’s intentions and His plan. Satan is an angel created by God (Isaiah 14:12), to whom God granted the capacity to perform many miracles (2 Thessalonians 2:9; Revelation 13:13). The Bible uses the word “all” (implying nearly the full extent) to describe the vast reach of this power, which Satan has used to oppose God.
However, because God sovereignly rules over all things, He permits whatever can serve His purpose to occur and endure. Conversely, He eliminates anything that does not align with His design, ensuring that His plan is fulfilled according to the will He established before the foundation of the world—or, more precisely, before the creation of this vast universe (Proverbs 8:30). The term “master craftsman” (or “artisan”), used in this passage to describe the Holy Spirit, signifies that from the very beginning—before anything else existed—God employed His Wisdom (the Holy Spirit) to devise His eternal plan and to create all things in accordance with it.
Consequently, as Christians, we can understand that God’s sovereignty over the entire universe is absolute. No event, however trivial, can take place outside God’s will (Matthew 10:30; Luke 12:7). When Scripture says that even the hairs on a person’s head are numbered, it implies that God governs even the most minute details—let alone more significant matters. After all, no human being would ever spend time counting individual hairs; whether one grows or falls out is of no consequence or concern to us. Yet God’s attention to matters humans might deem trivial or unworthy of concern shows that His sovereignty over all things throughout this vast universe is absolute.
As Christians, we should keep two crucial aspects of God’s absolute sovereignty in mind. First, God directly brings about all things to fulfill His eternal plan. Second, God permits all things—even those orchestrated by the schemes of Satan—to unfold and exist (such as the “weeds” among the wheat) so that they may contribute to the completion of His plan. To illustrate this, consider the concept of temptation. Christians must understand that while God Himself does not tempt anyone, He may permit Satan’s temptations to occur if they serve His ultimate purpose (James 1:13; 1 Corinthians 10:13).
This principle of divine sovereignty applies to everything, in both the invisible and visible realms. When Christians grasp how God exercises His sovereignty over all creation, they better understand both creation and human history. Recognizing God’s absolute sovereignty gives us a profound sense of peace as we follow Him—the peace that comes from His Word and from the Holy Spirit whom Jesus promised (John 14:27).
