CHILDREN OF THE LIGHT

1 THESSALONIANS 5:5 – You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness.

When a person repents of their sins and prays to accept the Lord, they are counted as children of the Light (Matthew 5:14; 1 Thessalonians 5:5). All Christians are aware of this, but one might ask: how many truly take pride in this title, and how many grasp the profound significance of this status—not only for the individual, but also for society and for eternal life?

We know the Bible does not use language merely for effect, nor does it employ hollow terms meant only for casual reading. When the Word of God calls Christians “children of the light,” this title carries immense meaning and great importance (Acts 13:47). Let us explore together the true meaning and substance of this designation.

The Word of God reveals that He Himself is the Light (1 John 1:5; John 8:12; 12:46). The Lord’s light is not merely physical—like the sun’s light—but also spiritual. It signifies righteousness, holiness, wisdom, and a perfect understanding of all things, encompassing both the past and the future.

While Christians still live in the flesh, we cannot possess a physical light identical to God’s light. In the spiritual realm, however, Christians can reflect the Lord’s light to some degree—specifically, the virtues that belong to Him (Ephesians 5:9)—as well as wisdom and an understanding of the mysteries of the unseen realm, spanning both the past and the future (Matthew 13:11; Mark 4:11; Luke 8:10).

Christians possess this light not because we are inherently superior to others, but because the Word of God illuminates us, as found in the Bible (Psalm 119:105). The Apostle Paul received this (1 Corinthians 2:7; 4:1). He did not view this as a privilege reserved exclusively for himself; rather, he encouraged other Christians to follow his example so that we, too, might receive what he had received from the Lord (Ephesians 1:9). This is because such light is a form of grace that God desires to bestow upon His people.

This light enables Christians to live a life of joy and peace, and to serve as effective witnesses for the Lord in this world (Matthew 5:16).
