THE LORD JESUS CHRIST IS GOD

Bible: Philippians 2: 5-11

Main verse: JOHN 1: 1 – In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

– Coming into this Christmas season, we will learn some truth about Jesus that the Bible has revealed for us from the beginning, that is the Lord Jesus Christ is God.

– To understand this truth, we only need the Bible, and you will see that it’s not too hard to grasp. But for some, it’s one of the most difficult subjects that often being misunderstood, even for long time Christians.

– For many people, and most of Christians, they simply believe that Jesus is the Son of God who came into the world to save mankind from sins.

– I want to emphasize the word simply or simplicity because it’s the cause of misunderstanding about Jesus.

– Misunderstood in the way of human, they think about God and Jesus as a heavenly family of which there were a Father and a Son.

– They satisfy with their assumption because there are many verses in the Bible recorded that Jesus is the Son of God.

GALATIANS 2: 20 – I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

GA-LA-TI 2: 20 – Tôi đã bị đóng đinh vào thập tự giá với Đấng Christ, mà tôi sống, không phải là tôi sống nữa, nhưng Đấng Christ sống trong tôi; nay tôi còn sống trong xác thịt, ấy là tôi sống trong đức tin của Con Đức Chúa Trời, là Đấng đã yêu tôi, và đã phó chính mình Ngài vì tôi.

HEBREWS 4: 14 – Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven,] Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.

HÊ-BƠ-RƠ 4: 14 – Ấy vậy, vì chúng ta có thầy tế lễ thượng phẩm lớn đã trải qua các từng trời, tức là Đức Chúa Jêsus, Con Đức Chúa Trời, thì hãy bền giữ đạo chúng ta đã nhận tin.

– Especially this verse:

1JOHN 4: 15 – If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God.

1GIĂNG 4: 15 – Ví bằng có ai xưng Đức Chúa Jêsus là Con Đức Chúa Trời, thì Đức Chúa Trời ở trong người, và người ở trong Đức Chúa Trời.

– There are always many Christians who really want to be counted as belonging to God while still living like unbelievers (meaning other religious people who do not believe in God of the Bible), that’s why they have tried hard to emphasize that Jesus was born by God, in a way human has a son, and eventually created a heavenly family with their imagination.

– And from that assumption of a heavenly family that later one people started to include Mari as Jesus’ mother, because, in their mind, it ought to be. A family could not lack of a mother’s figure. As a result Christians started to call her mother of God from the 4th century and somehow put her in equal status with God.

– That title had been confirmed by the Second council of Constantinople in 553.

– But we will talk about Mari’s role in Christian’s belief at another time. Today we will focus only on the subject of the Lord Jesus Christ is God.

– For many Christians, when they read some verses like this in the Bible, they quickly assumed that Jesus was really God’s born son in the same way as humans’.

1JOHN 5: 20 – We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.

1GIĂNG 5: 20 – Nhưng chúng ta biết Con Đức Chúa Trời đã đến, Ngài đã ban trí khôn cho chúng ta đặng chúng ta biết Đấng chân thật, và chúng ta ở trong Đấng chân thật, là ở trong Đức Chúa Jêsus Christ, Con của Ngài. Ấy chính Ngài là Đức Chúa Trời chân thật và là sự sống đời đời.

– We know that the Bible only use words in male term to describe God and throughout human history, people traditionally believe that men could not bear children. That’s why they must include a female’s figure into God’s family, to make things easy to understand in the way of human mind.

– That way of thinking is common in other earthly religions. As we can see, all of other beliefs always have a female deity to satisfy human thought. And when Christians don’t have the guidance of the Holy Spirit, that’s mean the Bible, they tend to think like other religious people.

– But when we really want to understand the Bible, at first we have to think and to view the truths in Scripture according to its perspective.

– Although the Bible was written for humans, but we must understand it in God’s concepts, not human’s, because God is not human, according to His words:

HOSEA 11: 9 – I will not carry out my fierce anger, nor will I devastate Ephraim again. For I am God, and not a man, the Holy One among you. I will not come against their cities.

Ô-SÊ 11: 9 – Ta cầm sự nóng giận lại, và sẽ chẳng lại hủy diệt Ép-ra-im. Vì ta là Đức Chúa Trời, không phải là người; ta là Đấng Thánh ở giữa ngươi, chẳng lấy cơn giận đến cùng ngươi.

– God has often reminded us of the differences between Him, the way He thinks and acts, and human’s way of thinking and behave.

ISAIAH 55: 9 – “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Ê-SAI 55: 9 – Vì các từng trời cao hơn đất bao nhiêu, thì đường lối ta cao hơn đường lối các ngươi, ý tưởng ta cao hơn ý tưởng các ngươi cũng bấy nhiêu.

DANIEL 4: 35 – All the peoples of the earth are regarded as nothing. He does as he pleases with the powers of heaven and the peoples of the earth. No one can hold back his hand or say to him: “What have you done?”

ĐA-NI-ÊN 4: 35 – Hết thảy dân cư trên đất thảy đều cầm như là không có; Ngài làm theo ý mình trong cơ binh trên trời, và ở giữa cư dân trên đất; chẳng ai có thể cản tay Ngài và hỏi rằng: Ngài làm chi vậy?

– Therefore, we Christians must understand Scriptures as it is intended to be according to God’s way. That’s means we must perceive or recognize its passages and verses by God’s point of view:

1CORINTHIANS 2: 14 – The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.

1CÔ-RINH-TÔ 2: 14 – Vả, người có tánh xác thịt không nhận được những sự thuộc về Thánh Linh của Đức Chúa Trời; bởi chưng người đó coi sự ấy như là sự dồ dại, và không có thể hiểu được, vì phải xem xét cách thiêng liêng.

– When the Bible recorded that Jesus was the Son of God, we must understand that it means He came from God as part of His divinity, a part from Himself:

JOHN 20: 31 – But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

GIĂNG 20: 31 – Nhưng các việc nầy đã chép, để cho các ngươi tin rằng Đức Chúa Jêsus là Đấng Christ, tức là Con Đức Chúa Trời, và để khi các ngươi tin, thì nhờ danh Ngài mà được sự sống.

– That is the way to express and explain the origin of a person in Hebrew language, and the Jews at the time understood right way:

JOHN 5: 18 – For this reason they tried all the more to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.

GIĂNG 5: 18 – Bởi cớ đó, dân Giu-đa càng kiếm cách nữa để giết Ngài, chẳng những vì Ngài phạm ngày Sa-bát thôi, mà lại vì Ngài gọi Đức Chúa Trời là Thân Phụ mình, làm ra mình bằng Đức Chúa Trời.

I and the Father are one. Again his Jewish opponents picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus said to them: I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these do you stone me? We are not stoning you for any good work, they replied, but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God. Jesus answered them: Is it not written in your Law: I have said you are gods? If he called them gods, to whom the word of God came, and Scripture cannot be set aside, what about the one whom the Father set apart as his very own and sent into the world? Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said I am God’s Son?

GIĂNG 10: 30-36 – Ta với Cha là một. Người Giu-đa lại lượm đá đặng ném Ngài. Đức Chúa Jêsus phán rằng: Ta đã làm trước mắt các ngươi lắm việc lành bởi Cha đến; vì việc chi mà các ngươi ném đã ta? Người Giu-đa trả lời rằng: Aáy chẳng phải vì một việc lành mà chúng ta ném đá ngươi, nhưng vì lời lộng ngôn: ngươi là người, mà tự xưng là Đức Chúa Trời. Đức Chúa Jêsus đáp rằng: Trong luật pháp của các ngươi há chẳng chép rằng: Ta đã phán: Các ngươi là các thần, hay sao? Nếu luật pháp gọi những kẻ được lời Đức Chúa Trời phán đến là các thần, và nếu Kinh Thánh không thể bỏ được, thì ta đây, là Đấng Cha đã biệt ra thánh, và sai xuống thế gian, nói: Ta là Con Đức Chúa Trời, cớ sao các ngươi cáo ta là nói lộng ngôn?

– This meaning has recorded many time in Scripture, that everyone came from Him, or created by Him all being called sons of God:

JOB 2: 1 – On another day the angels came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came with them to present himself before Him.

GIÓP 2: 1 – Xảy ra một ngày kia, các con trai của Đức Chúa Trời đến ra mắt Đức Giê-hô-va, Sa-tan cũng có đến trong vòng chúng đặng ra mắt Đức Giê-hô-va.

HOSEA 1: 10 – Yet the Israelites will be like the sand on the seashore, which cannot be measured or counted. In the place where it was said to them you are not my people, they will be called children of the living God.

Ô-SÊ 1: 10 – Dầu vậy, số con cái Y-sơ-ra-ên sẽ giống như cát bờ biển, không thể lường, không thể đếm; và chính nơi mà đã bảo chúng nó rằng: Các ngươi chẳng phải là dân ta, sẽ lại bảo rằng: Các ngươi là con trai của Đức Chúa Trời hằng sống.

LUKE 3: 38 – the son of Enosh, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.

LU-CA 3: 38 – Cai-nam con Ê-nót, Ê-nót con Sết, Sết con A-đam, A-đam con Đức Chúa Trời.

GALATIANS 3: 26 – So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith.

GA-LA-TI 3: 26 – Vì chưng anh em bởi tin Đức Chúa Jêsus Christ, nên hết thảy đều là con trai của Đức Chúa Trời.

– We humans are limited by our bodies so we cannot fathom the unlimited form of God. We are here and cannot be there at the same time, but because God is a powerful Spirit, He can be everywhere, in the whole universe at the same time. That is what we must understand.

– Because many people think about God in the same way they think about humans with bodies that cannot be at two different places at the same time so they thought that if God was in Heaven then He could not be Jesus on Earth. From that human’s point of view they assumed that Jesus must be the Son of God literally.

– Before we go further on with to understand the concept of God was at Heaven and Earth at the same time with two different titles, I would like to give you this example:

– There was a father who was driving to work. His small daughter at home had a beloved doll that was broken by accident. So she called him on the phone, crying and asking how she could fix it right away. The father, while driving, instructed his daughter to go to the home garage and find a tube of super clue. He told her to the details how to get that tube from one of cabinets that stored his working tools, then taught her how to fix her doll with the glue.

– The father, while driving with his body (eyes on the road, hands on the wheel, foot on the gas pedal), but part of his mind and his voice were back at the house, then the garage and imaginarily walked about it with his daughter to show her where the particular cabinet was and the drawer where the tube of super glue was. Then, also in his mind and with his voice, walked with his daughter back to her bedroom and continued to instruct her to fix the doll.

– This example illustrates how God had come into the world as Jesus to save mankind from sins and at the same time was in Heaven reigning the universe as always. And it also a reminder that the advance of science has its role of proving the Bible is truthful.

– In the ancient time a person voice could not be heard far away from where his standing so people could not fathom completely how Jesus was God and man at the same time, except those who were blessed with the Holy Spirit. But now we can use the example of a man talking on his phone to his daughter to understand how God was Jesus and Himself at the same time.

– And we must understand that Jesus is the Word of God, as the Holy Spirit is His wisdom that have been manifested into two Holy Beings.

GIĂNG 1: 1 – Ban đầu có Ngôi Lời, Ngôi Lời ở cùng Đức Chúa Trời, và Ngôi Lời là Đức Chúa Trời.

GIĂNG 8: 58 – Đức Chúa Jêsus đáp rằng: Quả thật, quả thật, ta nói cùng các ngươi, trước khi chưa có Áp-ra-ham, đã có ta.

CHÂM NGÔN 8: 22 – Trong buổi Đức Giê-hô-va khởi cuộc tạo hóa, về thời thái cổ, trước khi chưa dựng nên muôn vật thì Ngài đã có ta.

– That’s why when God created the world and the first human, He used the word WE/US to call Himself:

GENESIS 1: 26 – Then God said: Let Us make mankind in our image, in Our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.

SÁNG THẾ KÝ 1: 26 – Đức Chúa Trời phán rằng: Chúng ta hãy làm nên loài người như hình ta và theo tượng ta, đặng quản trị loài cá biển, loài chim trời, loài súc vật, loài côn trùng bò trên mặt đất, và khắp cả đất.

GENESIS 3: 22 – And the Lord God said: The man has now become like one of Us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.

SÁNG THẾ KÝ 3: 22 – Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời phán rằng: Nầy, về sự phân biệt điều thiện và điều ác, loài người đã thành một bực như chúng ta; vậy bây giờ, ta hãy coi chừng, e loài người giơ tay lên cũng hái trái cây sự sống mà ăn và được sống đời đời chăng.

– As Jesus is the Word of God, or God’s Voice, He could not be suffered on the cross as God’s intention, because nobody can nail a voice. That’s why He must be in human body to sacrifice Himself. And that’s why He used Mari as a way to be born like a normal human being.

PHILIPPIANS 2: 6-8 – Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to His own advantage; rather, He made Himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross!

PHI-LÍP 2: 6-8 – Ngài vốn có hình Đức Chúa Trời, song chẳng coi sự bình đẳng mình với Đức Chúa Trời là sự nên nắm giữ; chính Ngài đã tự bỏ mình đi, lấy hình tôi tớ và trở nên giống như loài người; Ngài đã hiện ra như một người, tự hạ mình xuống, vâng phục cho đến chết, thậm chí chết trên cây thập tự.

– Thus, as we can see, our Lord Jesus Christ is God Himself Who came to the world dying for humans because of their sins. That is the reason that we should worship Him like worshipping God without anyone above Him, because otherwise it’s the most blatant blasphemy that humans have made to this day.

JOHN 4: 23-24 – Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is Spirit, and His worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”

GIĂNG 4: 23-24 – Nhưng giờ hầu đến, và đã đến rồi, khi những kẻ thờ phượng thật lấy tâm thần và lẽ thật mà thờ phượng Cha, ấy đó là những kẻ thờ phượng mà Cha ưa thích vậy. Đức Chúa Trời là Thần, nên ai thờ lạy Ngài thì phải lấy tâm thần và lẽ thật mà thờ lạy.

– May God bless us with this important understanding about the Lord Jesus Christ and may God help us to keep this truth always in the way we worship Him until we all see Him coming back to Earth. Amen.

GIĂNG 6: 35 – Đức Chúa Jêsus phán rằng: Ta là bánh của sự sống; ai đến cùng ta chẳng hề đói, và ai tin ta chẳng hề khát.

MA-THI-Ơ 4: 4 – Đức Chúa Jêsus đáp: Có lời chép rằng: Người ta sống chẳng phải chỉ nhờ bánh mà thôi, song nhờ mọi lời nói ra từ miệng Đức Chúa Trời.
