THE LIFE OF DAVID 1

Bible: 1Samuel 16: 1-3

Main verse: 1SAMUEL 16: 3 part B – You shall anoint for Me the one I name to you.

– David is one of the most famous people in the Bible. Every Christian know about him, and his life has many lessons for us to study. To study the life of David, we should first learn about his genealogy.

– According to the Bible, David was the great grandson of Ruth and Boaz:

RUTH 4: 16-17 – Then Naomi took the child and laid him on her bosom, and became a nurse to him. Also the neighbor women gave him a name, saying: There is a son born to Naomi. And they called his name Obed. He is the father of Jesse, the father of David.

RU-TƠ 4: 16-17 – Na-ô-mi bồng đứa trẻ, để vào lòng mình, và nuôi nó. Những người nữ lân cận đặt tên cho nó là Ô-bết, mà rằng: Một đứa trai đã sanh cho Na-ô-mi. Ô-bết là cha của Y-sai, ông của Đa-vít.

– As we already know, Ruth’s first husband died, so that is why she went with her mother-in-law and later on married Boaz, the great grandfather of David:

RUTH 1: 1-4 – Now it came to pass, in the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bethlehem, Judah, went to dwell in the country of Moab, he and his wife and his two sons. The name of the man was Elimelech, the name of his wife was Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem, Judah. And they went to the country of Moab and remained there. Then Elimelech, Naomi’s husband, died; and she was left, and her two sons. Now they took wives of the women of Moab: the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth. And they dwelt there about ten years. Then both Mahlon and Chilion also died; so the woman survived her two sons and her husband.

RU-TƠ 1: 1-4 – Trong đời các quan xét, một cơn đói kém xảy đến trong xứ, có một người từ Bết-lê-hem xứ Giu-đa, đi với vợ và hai con trai mình đến kiều ngụ trong xứ Mô-áp. Người tên là Ê-li-mê-léc, vợ tên là Na-ô-mi, hai con trai tên là Mạc-lôn và Ki-li-ôn, đều là dân Ê-phơ-rát về Bết-lê-hem trong xứ Giu-đa. Đến xứ Mô-áp, chúng bèn ở tại đó. Ê-li-mê-léc, chồng của Na-ô-mi, qua đời, để nàng lại với hai con trai mình. Chúng nó cưới vợ trong người nữ Mô-áp, người nầy tên là Ọt-ba, người kia tên là Ru-tơ. Họ ở tại đó độ mười năm. Kế sau, Mạc-lôn và Ki-li-ôn cũng thác, để Na-ô-mi ở lại, không chồng không con.

RU-TƠ 4: 9-10 – And Boaz said to the elders and all the people: You are witnesses this day that I have bought all that was Elimelech’s, and all that was Chilion’s and Mahlon’s, from the hand of Naomi. Moreover, Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of Mahlon, I have acquired as my wife, to perpetuate the name of the dead through his inheritance, that the name of the dead may not be cut off from among his brethren and from his position at the gate. You are witnesses this day.

RU-TƠ 4: 9-10 – Bấy giờ, Bô-ô nói cùng các trưởng lão và cả dân sự rằng: Ngày nay, các ông chứng kiến rằng tôi mua nơi tay Na-ô-mi mọi tài sản thuộc về Ê-li-mê-léc, về Ki-lôn, và về Mạc-lôn, và cũng lấy Ru-tơ, người Mô-áp, vợ của Mạc-lôn, làm vợ tôi, đặng nối danh kẻ chết cho sản nghiệp người; hầu cho danh kẻ chết không mất khỏi giữa anh em mình và khỏi dân sự của thành người; ngày nay các ông làm chứng về điều đó.

– The Moabites were the enemies of the Israelites, and because of that, they were not allowed to come into the assembly of God, and were punished almost into extinction.

DEUTERONOMY 23: 3 – An Ammonite or Moabite shall not enter the assembly of the Lord; even to the tenth generation none of his descendants shall enter the assembly of the Lord forever.

PHỤC TRUYỀN 23: 3 – Dân Am-môn và dân Mô-áp sẽ không được phép vào hội Đức Giê-hô-va, dầu đến đời thứ mười cũng chẳng hề bao giờ vào được.

NEHEMIAH 13: 1 – On that day they read from the Book of Moses in the hearing of the people, and in it was found written that no Ammonite or Moabite should ever come into the assembly of God.

NÊ-HÊ-MI 13: 1 – Trong ngày đó, người ta đọc sách Môi-se có dân sự nghe; trong đó có chép rằng người Am-môn và người Mô-áp đời đời không được vào hội của Đức Chúa Trời.

ISAIAH 16: 14 – But now the Lord has spoken, saying: Within three years, as the years of a hired man, the glory of Moab will be despised with all that great multitude, and the remnant will be very small and feeble.

Ê-SAI 16: 14 – Bây giờ thì Đức Giê-hô-va phán như vầy: Trong ba năm, kể như năm kẻ ở mướn, sự vinh hiển của Mô-áp với cả đoàn dân đông của nó sẽ bị khinh hèn; và số còn sót lại sẽ ít lắm, không kể ra gì.

– One of the reasons why the Moabites were punished by God was because they made warwith the Israelites and God took that as they were going against Himself:

JEREMIAH 48: 42 – And Moab shall be destroyed as a people because he exalted himself against the Lord.

GIÊ-RÊ-MI 48: 42 – Mô-áp sẽ bị diệt, không thành một dân nữa, vì nó đã lên mình nghịch cùng Đức Giê-hô-va.

ZEPHANIAH 2: 8 – I have heard the reproach of Moab, and the insults of the people of Ammon, with which they have reproached My people, and made arrogant threats against their borders.

SÔ-PHÔ-NI 2: 8 – Ta đã nghe lời Mô-áp chế báng, lời con cái Am-môn sỉ nhục, chúng nó xỉ vả dân ta, khoe mình nghịch cùng bờ cõi nó.

– It’s comforting to hear that God loves His children, and to realize that He will protect us from anyone who harms us.

– We can see that in His punishment, there are also mercy for those who had faith in Him, like with Ruth:

RUTH 1: 8-9 – And Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law: Go, return each to her mother’s house. The Lord deal kindly with you, as you have dealt with the dead and with me. The Lord grant that you may find rest, each in the house of her husband. So she kissed them, and they lifted up their voices and wept.

RU-TƠ 1: 8-9 – Nhưng Na-ô-mi nói cùng hai dâu mình rằng: Mỗi con hãy trở về nhà mẹ mình đi. Cầu Đức Giê-hô-va lấy ơn đãi hai con như hai con đã đãi các người thác của chúng ta, và đã đãi chính mình ta! Nguyện Đức Giê-hô-va ban cho hai con được bình yên ở nơi nhà chồng mới! Rồi người ôm hôn hai nàng, còn hai nàng cất tiếng lên khóc.

RUTH 1: 16-18 – But Ruth said: Entreat me not to leave you, or to turn back from following after you; For wherever you go, I will go; And wherever you lodge, I will lodge; Your people shall be my people, and your God, my God. Where you die, I will die, and there will I be buried. The Lord do so to me, and more also, if anything but death parts you and me. When she saw that she was determined to go with her, she stopped speaking to her.

RU-TƠ 1: 16-18 – Ru-tơ thưa rằng: Xin chớ nài tôi phân rẽ mẹ; vì mẹ đi đâu, tôi sẽ đi đó; mẹ ở nơi nào, tôi sẽ ở nơi đó. Dân sự của mẹ, tức là dân sự của tôi; Đức Chúa Trời của mẹ, tức là Đức Chúa Trời của tôi; mẹ thác nơi nào, tôi muốn thác và được chôn nơi đó. Ví bằng có sự chi khác hơn sự chết phân cách tôi khỏi mẹ, nguyện Đức Giê-hô-va giáng họa cho tôi! Na-ô-mi thấy nàng quyết định theo mình, nên không nói nữa.

– Because of her faith in God, Ruth became the great grandmother of David and is now part of Jesus’ earthly genealogy. When we have faith in the Lord Jesus, we will be inhabitants of God’s heavenly Kingdom forever.

– David was chosen by God, because of that time the Israelites were in need of a leader who feared God. Saul had failed God as a leader, and he must be replaced by someone else. That’s why God had instructed the prophet Samuel to go to Jesse’s house in Bethlehem:

1SAMUEL 16: 1 – Now the Lord said to Samuel: How long will you mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go; I am sending you to Jesse the Bethlehemite. For I have provided Myself a king among his sons.

1SA-MU-ÊN 16: 1Đức Giê-hô-va phán cùng Sa-mu-ên rằng: Ngươi buồn rầu về việc Sau-lơ cho đến chừng nào? Ta đã từ bỏ nó, hầu cho nó không còn làm vua trên Y-sơ-ra-ên nữa. Hãy đổ dầu đầy sừng của ngươi và đi. Ta sẽ sai ngươi đến Y-sai, người Bết-lê-hem; vì trong vòng các con trai người, ta đã chọn một người làm vua.

– There are many roles and positions, but God only anoints the most important ones and those are the kings, prophets and servants of God. That’s why God wanted the prophet Samuel to anoint David as the new king of Israel.

– In today’s world, when God’s children need to be lead rightly on His path of salvation, God will anoint some of the most faithful ones into that role for His glory and for the benefits of His children.

– May our young people have faith strong enough to be chosen by God to serve Him in His house until the day He comes back to earth. Amen.
