THE LIFE OF DAVID 2

Bible: 1Samuel 16: 1-13

Main verse: 1SAMUEL 16: 13 part B – The Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward.

– There are many differences between Saul and David, who once were the kings of the Israelites. However, we will be looking at three important points. Firstly, in Saul’s case, the people wanted a king and God gave them one according to their idea. In David’s, God wanted another king to replace Saul who disobeyed Him many times.

1SAMUEL 8: 4-5 – Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah, and said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations

1SA-MU-ÊN 8: 4-5 – Hết thảy những trưởng lão đều hiệp lại, đến tìm Sa-mu-ên tại Ra-ma, và nói rằng: Kìa, ông đã già yếu, còn các con trai ông lại chẳng noi theo gương của ông. Bây giờ, xin hãy lập trên chúng tôi một vua đặng đoán xét chúng tôi, y như các dân tộc khác đã có rồi.

1SAMUEL 16: 1 – And the LORD said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.

1SA-MU-ÊN 16: 1 – Đức Giê-hô-va phán cùng Sa-mu-ên rằng: Ngươi buồn rầu về việc Sau-lơ cho đến chừng nào? Ta đã từ bỏ nó, hầu cho nó không còn làm vua trên Y-sơ-ra-ên nữa. Hãy đổ dầu đầy sừng của ngươi và đi. Ta sẽ sai ngươi đến Y-sai, người Bết-lê-hem. vì trong vòng các con trai người, ta đã chọn một người làm vua.

– In ancient times, a king must be strong to lead in battles and to be a suitable representative for their people. That’s one of the reason why Saul was chosen. That marks the second difference between Saul and David. Their appearances contrasts each other. Saul was tall and strong while David was small and agile.

1SAMUEL 9: 1-2 – Now there was a man of Benjamin, whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Bechorath, the son of Aphiah, a Benjamite, a mighty man of power, and he had a son, whose name was Saul, a choice young man, and a goodly: and there was not among the children of Israel a goodlier person than he: from his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people

1SA-MU-ÊN 9: 1-2 – Bấy giờ, có một người Bên-gia-min, tên là Kích, con trai A-bi-ên, cháu Xê-rô, chắt Bê-cô-rát, chít A-phi-ác, là con trai của một người Bên-gia-min. Kích vốn một người dõng sĩ, có một con trai, tên là Sau-lơ, còn trẻ và lịch sự. Trong dân Y-sơ-ra-ên chẳng ai lịch sự bằng người; người cao hơn cả dân sự từ vai trở lên.

1SAMUEN 16: 11-12 – And Samuel said unto Jesse: Are here all thy children? And he said: There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse: Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither, and he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said: Arise, anoint him, for this is he.

1SA-MU-ÊN 16: 11-12 – Đoạn, Sa-mu-ên nói cùng Y-sai rằng: Hết thảy con trai ngươi là đó sao? Y-sai đáp rằng: Hãy còn đứa con út, nhưng nó đi chăn chiên. Sa-mu-ên nói: Hãy sai gọi nó; chúng ta không ngồi ăn trước khi nó đến. Vậy, Y-sai sai gọi người. Mặt người hồng hồng, con mắt xinh lịch, và hình dung tốt đẹp. Đức Giê-hô-va phán cùng Sa-mu-ên rằng: Ấy là nó; hãy đứng dậy xức dầu cho nó.

– That’s why the prophet Samuel was wrong when he saw Jesse’s first born son. He was tall and strong like Saul, but it’s not what God wanted for a king. It happened to the same to David’ six older brothers. God did not choose any of them.

1SAMUEL 16: 6-7, 10 – And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said: Surely the LORD’S anointed is before him. But the LORD said unto Samuel: Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him, for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart… Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse: The LORD hath not chosen these

1SA-MU-ÊN 16: 6-7, 10 – Khi chúng đến, Sa-mu-ên thấy Ê-li-áp, bèn thầm rằng: Quả hẳn, kẻ chịu xức dầu của Đức Giê-hô-va đang ở trước mặt Ngài. Nhưng Đức Giê-hô-va phán cùng Sa-mu-ên rằng; Chớ xem về bộ dạng và hình vóc cao lớn của nó, vì ta đã bỏ nó. Đức Giê-hô-va chẳng xem điều gì loài người xem; loài người xem bề ngoài, nhưng Đức Giê-hô-va nhìn thấy trong lòng… Y-sai biểu bảy con trai mình đi qua trước mặt Sa-mu-ên như vậy; thì Sa-mu-ên nói cùng Y-sai rằng: Đức Giê-hô-va chẳng chọn một ai trong chúng nó.

– The Bible let us know what God was going after when He chose a king for the Israelites. He wanted a king who had faith in the Lord. David was small in size, but he was courageous and he loved the Lord.

1CORINTHIANS 1: 27 – But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty.

1CÔ-RINH-TÔ 1: 27 – Nhưng Đức Chúa Trời đã chọn những sự dại ở thế gian để làm hổ thẹn những kẻ khôn; Đức Chúa Trời đã chọn những sự yếu ở thế gian để làm hổ thẹn những sự mạnh.

2CORINTHIANS 3: 5 – Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God.

2CÔ-RINH-TÔ 3: 5 – Không phải tự mình chúng tôi có tài năng mà nghĩ việc gì như bởi chính mình chúng tôi, nhưng tài năng của chúng tôi đến từ Đức Chúa Trời;

1SAMUEL 17: 34-35 – And David said unto Saul: Thy servant kept his father’s sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock, and I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth, and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.

1SA-MU-ÊN 17: 34-35 – Đa-vít tâu cùng Sau-lơ rằng: Khi tôi tớ vua chăn chiên của cha mình, hễ có sư tử hay là con gấu đến tha một con chiên của bầy, thì tôi đuổi theo, đánh nó, rứt con chiên khỏi miệng nó; hễ nó cất lên cự tôi, tôi nắm râu nó, đánh và giết nó đi.

PSALM 27: 4 – One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple.

THI THIÊN 27: 4 – Tôi đã xin Đức Giê-hô-va một điều, và sẽ tìm kiếm điều ấy! Ấy là tôi muốn trọn đời được ở trong nhà Đức Giê-hô-va, để nhìn xem sự tốt đẹp của Đức Giê-hô-va, và cầu hỏi trong đền của Ngài.

Those two characteristics were sufficient enough for him to be a good king to the Israelites. David was always brave while facing danger, and because he loved God, he would lead his people on the path that the Lord had intended for them.

1KINGS 2: 1-3 – Now the days of David drew nigh that he should die; and he charged Solomon his son, saying: I go the way of all the earth: be thou strong therefore, and shew thyself a man, and keep the charge of the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself

1CÁC VUA 2: 1-3 – Khi ngày của Đa-vít hầu trọn, người truyền lịnh cho Sa-lô-môn, con trai mình, mà rằng: Ta hầu đi con đường chung của cả thế gian, khá mạnh dạn và nên người trượng phu! Hãy giữ điều Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời muốn con giữ, để đi trong đường lối Ngài, gìn giữ những luật pháp, điều răn, mạng lịnh, và sự dạy dỗ của Ngài, y như đã chép trong luật pháp của Môi-se, hầu cho con làm điều chi hay là đi nơi nào cũng đều được thành công.

– Those two characteristics are also important in Christian life. We need to be courageous in order to do what God wants us to do, to win over Satan’s temptation and to follow the Lord faithfully to the end.

1PETER 3: 14 – But and if ye suffer for righteousness’ sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled

1PHI-E-RƠ 3: 14 – Nếu anh em phải vì sự công bình mà chịu khổ, ấy thật là có phước. Chớ sợ điều họ sợ và đừng rối trí.

REVELATION 2: 10 – Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.

KHẢI HUYỀN 2: 10 – Ngươi chớ ngại điều mình sẽ chịu khổ. Nầy, ma quỉ sẽ quăng nhiều kẻ trong các ngươi vào ngục, hầu cho các ngươi bị thử thách; các ngươi sẽ bị hoạn nạn trong mười ngày. Khá giữ trung tín cho đến chết, rồi ta sẽ ban cho ngươi mũ triều thiên của sự sống.

– In reality, some Christians are afraid to confront persecution to proclaim the Word of God faithfully and correctly to the lost world. They have tried to alter the message in the Bible, hoping that it will fit in with unbeliever’s lifestyles and perceptions. However, by doing so, they stray far away from the truth and the path of the Bible.

REVELATION 21: 8 – But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

KHẢI HUYỀN 21: 8 – Còn những kẻ hèn nhát, kẻ chẳng tin, kẻ đáng gớm ghét, kẻ giết người, kẻ dâm loạn, kẻ phù phép, kẻ thờ thần tượng, và phàm kẻ nào nói dối, phần của chúng nó ở trong hồ có lửa và diêm cháy bừng bừng: đó là sự chết thứ hai.

– Some Christians are afraid to hurt the feeling of unbelievers and they rather offend God than to offend unbelievers. They fear the mortal more than God, but in return, they only receive scorn and they’ll be looked down on for the rest of their lives. Even when they have adopted unbeliever’s lifestyles with the hopes to be accepted, they are still considered outsiders to unbelievers.

– We should learn to have David’s characteristics to please the Lord. With the help of the Holy Spirit we will be able to develop such characteristics in ourselves.

EPHESIANS 6: 10 – Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might.

Ê-PHÊ-SÔ 6: 10 – Vả lại, anh em phải làm mạnh dạn trong Chúa, nhờ sức toàn năng của Ngài.

– May God bless us with strong determination to follow God courageously and faithfully until we see Him face to face on the His glory day. Amen.
